The Longest Day Swim in Galway City, provides the opportunity to “Swim the Corrib”. This unique experience, has two distance options. The 4km swim starts at the Gleno Abbey Hotel and the 2.5km swim starts at Dangan in University of Galway. The finish for both races is at Steamers Quay in Woodquay.
The Longest Day Swim 2025 is organised by Galway Swimming Club and our charity partner this year is Claddagh Watch – Patrolling Galway’s Waterways. We’re promoting the physical and mental health benefits of swimming and open water safety.

This is a timed, open water river swim for competent over 18’s open water swimmers. For insurance purposes you must be a Current Swim Ireland Club Member / Swim Ireland Special Member.

Corrib River Swim Route
The 2.5km race begins at the
Dangan slipway, opposite the
picturesque Menlo Castle
2.5km Distance
Located at the University of Galway’s Dangan Sports Facilities, the 2.5km will begin from the slipway and cross over to Menlo Castle side of the river, before turning downstream.
The 4km race begins at the
Gleno Abbey Hotel, from the
pier at the end of the Golf Course.
4km Distance
Following the safety briefing, a bus will transfer swimmers from registration at Dangan Sports Hall to the grounds of Glenlo Abbey Hotel. A short stroll via the golf course leads to the pier for the 4km starting point.
Swimmers stay left of the river
Take in sights and stay safe
For both routes, swimmers are required to stay left of the river swimming downstream and follow the course. Boats, including the Corrib Princess, will be sharing the river.
Both swims finish at
Steamers Quay in Woodquay.
2.5K & 4K Finishing Point
Both races will finish at Steamers Quay, (Commercial Boat Club), which is located above the weir, on the left hand side of the river, travelling downstream.
Friends, family and spectators are invited to come cheer on the swimmers as the complete this iconic swim.

FAQs
How do we get from Registration to 4km Start
Following the safety briefing at the Dangan Pavilion, buses will transport swimmers to the Glenlo Abbey Hotel. Swimmers will make their way to start point on the river. The bus will make two trips to transport all the swimmers.
Where do swimmers get changed for the race start?
For both the 4km and 2.5km, swimmers will be changing at the Dangan Pavilion. Swimmers will be provided with numbered bags and a van will transport your gear to the Woodquay finishing point. A van will also be present at the 4km start (Gleno Abbey Hotel Pier) to take swimmers’ flip-flops/t-shirts.
How do I get back to my car at Dangan?
Parking at the race finish (Woodquay) is limited. If you are swimming with a group, please arrange for one of the group to leave a car at Woodquay and bring your group back their cars. In addition, this year, we will arranging a mini-bus to assist with transporting swimmers back to their cars at Danagan following the trophy presentations.
Are there showers at the race finish?
Swimmers will be provided access to showers inside Commercial Rowing Club.
Is there a minimum age to enter?
Yes, the minimum age is 18 years
Do I need to be a Club Member of Swim Ireland?
This is event is open to Swim Ireland Club Members, holders of Swim Ireland Special Membership and holders of Triathlon Ireland’s Swim Plus Membership. Swim Ireland’s Special Membership category gives you the opportunity to take part in events otherwise confined to Swim Ireland Club Members.
